Web Design for Masonry Contractors in Ontario

Masonry is the only exterior trade whose product has a published, checkable recipe and a weather window narrow enough to count in days. Both of those are website material, and almost nobody in the trade uses them. Before writing a word for this niche I counted how many days a year each Ontario city actually allows repointing under the conditions Canada's own research council sets out.

Workable repointing days per year — my count, 2015–2025

Eleven-year means. A day counts when its maximum is 27°C or under, it recorded under 5 mm of precipitation, and no night in the following week of curing fell below zero — the two conditions NRC names for repointing older masonry. Toronto gets 54 more of them a year than Kitchener, which is the same trade priced against a third less calendar.

What makes a masonry website different from other trade websites?

Three questions arrive before the photographs and none of them is about price. Does the address need a municipal heritage permit, when can the work physically be done, and what will go in the joint? All three have published answers, which is unusual for a trade. A masonry site that carries them is answering what decides whether a job happens this year.

Rule one · the statute A designated address needs a municipal permit first

Section 42 of the Ontario Heritage Act prohibits altering any exterior part of a property in a heritage conservation district without a municipal permit, and council has up to 90 days to decide. Repairing masonry is explicitly on the list in municipalities that publish one.

Rule two · the season The product exists for about a third of the year

Between 81 and 135 days depending on the city, as counted above. The season also peaks later than people expect — in the city measured in detail, September beats July by five working days.

Rule three · the mix The wrong mortar damages the wall it repairs

NRC warns a cement-rich mix "can result in too high a compressive strength for the hardness of the masonry units, resulting in damage to the units". Saying which family you use, and why, separates you from a price list. The strength ranges, set out.

None of this is advertising copy — it is the information a homeowner with a century brick house is already trying to find, usually by reading a heritage committee agenda. Putting it on your own pages is the cheapest lead work available in this trade, and it is also the part a competitor cannot copy convincingly, because the numbers have to be computed for the city you actually work in.

How long is the masonry season in Ontario, city by city?

From 81 days a year in Kitchener to 135 in Toronto. I took eleven years of Environment and Climate Change Canada daily records for each city and counted the days that satisfy both conditions the National Research Council states for repointing older masonry, then kept only the stations whose records were at least 94% complete.

Eight stations I wanted in this table are not in it, and that is worth saying rather than hiding. A station whose daily record has gaps produces a low count that looks like bad weather, so I set a completeness floor of 94% of days and dropped everything below it — an unreadable day is not a frozen one. Windsor is missing for a different reason: no Windsor station in the archive covers the whole 2015–2025 window. These are the stations that failed the floor, with the share of days I could not read:
  • Hamilton A · 8.9%
  • London CS · 10.4%
  • Peterborough A · 12.6%
  • Belleville · 13.2%
  • Trenton A · 15.8%
  • Sudbury A · 20.0%
  • Oshawa WPCP · 56.8%
  • Thunder Bay A · 35% of days absent

Counted by me on 13 September 2026 from the Environment and Climate Change Canada climate-daily service, calendar years 2015–2025, 4,018 daily observations per station. Conditions from Ken Trischuk and Madeleine Z. Rousseau, "Repointing Mortars for Older Masonry", National Research Council Canada, NRCC-50461: repointing "should be curtailed" above 27°C and done "well before or well after freezing weather", with three to seven days of damp curing after. Days with an incomplete record are excluded rather than counted as workable, so every figure is a floor. A heated enclosure extends the season and is outside what this count measures.

What does the Ontario Heritage Act require before masonry is altered?

A permit from the municipality, on any property inside a designated heritage conservation district, for any alteration other than the interior. Council has 90 days from the notice of receipt to decide, and if it does not decide in that time the permit is deemed granted. Individually designated properties are governed separately under Part IV.

The practical consequence for a masonry business is a scheduling one. The statutory maximum is 90 days; most municipalities decide far sooner, and minor alterations defined in a district plan are usually approved by staff without a committee at all. But the customer does not know which category their wall falls into, and neither does the contractor standing in the driveway. So the permit question has to be raised at enquiry time — which means the website, not the site visit.

What that looks like in practice is one page and one form field. The page names the districts in your city, links to the municipal heritage register, and states the 90 days and the deemed permit. The form asks for the street address. Between them, a designated-property enquiry identifies itself before you have driven anywhere.

Ontario Heritage Act, R.S.O. 1990, c. O.18, sections 42 (1), 42 (4) and 42 (5) — read from the consolidated statute in force 1 April 2026. Municipal practice varies and the registers are municipal documents; the Kingston page works one city's rules through end to end, including the grant that is only available behind an active permit.

The closest project I have, and how I price the rest

Service page of the exterior renovation and stucco website I designed and hand-coded in Toronto

An exterior renovation and stucco company in Toronto

I have not built a website for a masonry contractor. The nearest work is Build Master Stucco — buildmasterstucco.com — an exterior renovation and stucco company whose site I designed and hand-coded around before-and-after project photography, clearly scoped services and a low-friction estimate request. Read it in full in the exterior renovation case study.

That build is the proof for the half of a masonry site that sells finish quality from photographs. The permit page, the season page and the mortar page do not exist on it, and I quote them as new work rather than as something already solved. Related trades with pages of their own: stucco and EIFS, siding and exteriors, restoration companies.

What pages does a masonry contractor's website need?

Seven. Three of them are specific to this trade — the heritage check, the measured season and the mortar question — and they are the reason the other four get read at all. The remaining four are the ordinary work of any trade site: one page per type of work, close-up photography, the service area with its travel line, and a form that asks the three things that matter.

Is my address a heritage address?

District names, what individual designation means, a link to the municipal register, the 90-day decision and the deemed permit.

When can the work happen?

Your city's measured numbers, which months fill first, and why a February booking and an August booking are different products.

What goes in the joint

The three mortar families, their published strength ranges, and the fact that the existing mortar is the benchmark the new mix is matched to.

One page per type of work

Repointing, chimney rebuild and repair, parging, brick and stone replacement, lintels and sills, foundation work. Separate searches, separate prices.

Before and after, close up

Your own photographs with the joint visible at close range, because masonry is judged at 30 centimetres rather than from the sidewalk.

Service area with the travel line

The municipalities you actually drive to and the distance at which the price changes.

Quote form: address, wall, joint

Address to start the permit check, wall type to start the mortar conversation, photographs of the joint. Three fields instead of a blank message box.

A build of this scope is $899 to $2,999 one time and goes live in 5 to 7 days once content is ready. I run the season count for whichever weather station covers your service area as part of the build. Full pricing · SEO optimization · Google Maps management from $149/mo.

Masonry web design by city

One city worked through end to end so far, with its own measured calendar and its own municipal rules. More follow; the research is done per city because the numbers are not transferable.

Common questions

Do masonry contractors need a permit to repoint a heritage building in Ontario?+

The owner does, where the property is designated. Section 42 of the Ontario Heritage Act prohibits altering any exterior part of a property in a heritage conservation district without a permit from the municipality, and municipalities that publish a list of covered work include repairing the masonry. Routine maintenance as council defines it is exempt.

How long is the masonry and repointing season in Ontario?+

Between 81 and 135 days a year depending on the city, by my count of eleven years of Environment Canada records against the NRC conditions for repointing. Toronto came out highest at 135, Kingston 115, Ottawa and Barrie 96, Brockville 95 and Kitchener 81. A heated enclosure extends the season beyond what that count measures.

Why does repointing stop above 27 degrees?+

Because the mortar dries before it cures. NRC's guidance states that when air temperatures are likely to exceed 27 degrees Celsius repointing should be curtailed, and warns that rapid drying leads to shrinkage cracks. Its remedy during curing is damp burlap under a plastic sheet, rewetted regularly, for three to seven days after the joint is tooled.

What should a masonry website say about the mortar it uses?+

Which of the three families it uses and why that one suits the wall. Lime mortars run 0.5 to 2 MPa, hydraulic limes 1 to 10, and Portland cement and lime mixes 2 to 15. NRC warns that a cement-rich mix can exceed the hardness of the masonry units and damage them, and that the existing mortar is the benchmark for matching.

Is a website worth it for a masonry business that works on referrals?+

It does a job a referral cannot. A referral tells a homeowner you are competent; it does not tell them whether their address needs a permit, when you can start, or what will go in the joint. Those three answers are what turns a recommendation into a signed quote, and they are readable at midnight without you on the phone.

Have you built a masonry contractor website before?+

No. The closest is an exterior renovation and stucco company in Toronto, Build Master Stucco, whose site I designed and hand-coded around before-and-after photography, scoped service pages and estimate requests. That half transfers. The permit page, the season page and the mortar page are new work and I price them as new rather than as something already solved.

How much does a masonry website cost and how long does it take?+

A build of this scope is $899 to $2,999 one time and goes live in 5 to 7 days once content is ready, the same range and timeline as every other build on this site. The variables are how many work-type pages and how many service-area pages you want. Google Business Profile management is priced separately from $149 per month.
