Driving School Website Design in Ontario
Every government-approved driving school in the province sells the same legislated course: a minimum of 40 hours, made up of at least 20 hours in class or online, at least 10 hours in the car with a licensed instructor, and 10 hours of flexible instruction. The ministry's public register lists 1,473 entries across 218 city names and publishes three yes/no columns about each one. Everything that actually separates one school from the next — the mix of those flexible ten, the cohort dates, the pickup areas, the car, the instructors, the highway lessons — appears nowhere on that register, so it has to be written on your own site. There is no driving school in my portfolio yet, and I would rather write that than imply otherwise.
Only the dashed ten are yours to arrange. Ontario names the five things they may contain and does not prescribe the proportions.
Thirty of the forty hours are the same everywhere. The website's job starts with the ten that are not, and continues with everything the register does not carry.
Short answer
Lead Web Studio designs and hand-codes websites for driving schools and driving instructors across Ontario — mobile-first, structured for local search, no template and no page builder. Every site is written around what the ministry leaves open: a course page publishing how the ten flexible hours are spent, real cohort dates instead of an enquiry form, the pickup areas and the car named, an instructor page a stranger can check, a highway-lesson page for the one thing a Level One driver cannot do with a parent, and a sign-up a teenager can finish on a phone. A build is $899–$2,999 one-time and goes live in 5–7 days once content is ready.
What Ontario Decides, and What Is Left to You
The left column is identical for all 1,473 entries on the ministry's register. The right column is everything else, and none of it appears on the register at all.
Fixed by the ministry
Same for every approved school in the province.
- A minimum of 40 hours of instruction
- At least 20 hours of classroom or digital instruction
- A minimum of 10 hours in-vehicle with a licensed instructor
- No more than 2 hours of in-vehicle training in one day
- In-vehicle training completed within 1 year of the classroom start
- Only licensed instructors at licensed schools may teach the course
- The school certifies the student online; the driver record is updated through the ministry
- A graduate may take the G1 exit road test at 8 months instead of 12
Yours to decide, and to publish
None of it appears on the province's register.
- How the 10 flexible hours are split between class, digital, in-vehicle, simulator and homelinks
- The actual cohort dates, and how many seats are left
- How long an in-car session runs, and where it starts and ends
- The pickup areas — the real service radius, not the city name
- Which vehicle a student learns in
- Who your instructors are and how long they have taught
- Whether you offer highway lessons, and what they cost
- The make-up policy when a lesson is missed
- How you take payment, and whether a deposit holds a seat

The Work These Pages Are Built On
UFootball Soccer Academy is a youth club in Etobicoke, live at ufootballsc.com. I designed and hand-coded it around the order a parent shops in — age band, schedule, location, register — with no phone call anywhere in the path.
A driving school has the same problem. A fixed-length program, bought by a parent for a teenager, decided on schedule and location before teaching quality is ever compared. The second reference is a booking-first service site where the entire appointment can be completed on a phone, which is what an in-car lesson calendar has to do. I would rather point at those two than invent a driving school case study.
The Pages a Driving School Actually Uses
One page per question a student, a parent or a returning adult needs answered — not one page per package name.
| Page | Who lands on it | What it has to answer |
|---|---|---|
| Home | A parent comparing schools in one sitting. | That you are on the ministry's approved list, what the course costs in total, when the next cohort starts, and one button that books. |
| The BDE course | Anyone deciding whether to buy the 40 hours at all. | The 20 / 10 / 10 structure, how your flexible ten are spent, the eight-month time reduction stated accurately, and a careful sentence about insurance. |
| Cohort dates | A family with one free weekend a month. | Real dates, seats remaining, and what happens if a session is missed. Not a form promising the schedule by email. |
| In-car lessons | Students who already have a G1 and want hours. | Session length, pickup areas by name, which car, hourly price, and how to book a single lesson without buying a package. |
| Highway lessons | Level One drivers, and G2 holders who avoid highways. | That a licensed instructor is the only way a G1 driver may use a 400-series highway, and that the G2 exit test requires highway experience. |
| Instructors | Parents putting a sixteen-year-old in a stranger's car. | Names, how long each has taught, languages spoken, and that they hold a driving instructor's licence. |
| Adult & refresher | Newcomers, nervous drivers and road-test retakes. | That the school teaches adults too, whether the car can be used for the test, and how a single assessment lesson works. |
| Pickup areas | People just outside the city line. | Named neighbourhoods and townships rather than a radius, so local search has something concrete to match. |
Everything a Driving School Site Needs
Built for a parent deciding on a phone in the evening, and for the ministry-list reader who checks you afterwards.
Answered before anyone calls
The facts a family has already filtered on, in the first screen.
- Your entry on the approved-schools list, linked so it can be verified in one click
- The 20 / 10 / 10 structure, with your own split of the flexible ten
- Dated cohorts with seats remaining, not an enquiry form
- Pickup areas named, and the car shown in your own photographs
- Instructors with names, languages and years taught
- One total price, with what is and is not included underneath it
Built into the code
The parts nobody sees, which decide whether the rest gets found.
- A sign-up that asks for the G1 issue date first and everything else later
- Booking a single in-car lesson without buying a package
- Pages per pickup area, naming real neighbourhoods and townships
- Fast on a weak signal — no hero video, no chat bubble over the book button
- Service and local business schema with a consistent name, address and phone
- A Google Business Profile carrying exactly the same details

Driving School Website FAQ
What makes a driving school website different from any other service site?+
The product is set by the province. A BDE course is a minimum of 40 hours — at least 20 in class or online, at least 10 in-vehicle with a licensed instructor, and 10 flexible — and every approved school sells the same package. So the website carries what the ministry leaves open: the mix of the flexible ten, the cohort dates, the pickup areas, the car, the instructors and the make-up policy.
How many government-approved driving schools are there in Ontario?+
1,473 entries across 218 city names on the ministry's published list, which carries city, school name, address, phone and three yes/no flags — digital curriculum, driver improvement course and defensive driving course. 1,248 of the entries show a digital curriculum as available and 206 show a driver improvement course. Counted from Ontario's open-data file on 24 August 2026.
What are the ten hours of flexible instruction?+
Ontario allows them to be delivered as classroom instruction, digital instruction, additional in-vehicle instruction, driving-simulator instruction or homelinks, and does not prescribe the mix. That makes the flexible ten the only part of the 40 hours where two compliant schools genuinely differ — and it is almost never published, which is exactly why it belongs on the course page.
Can a G1 student practise on a 400-series highway?+
Only with a licensed driving instructor. At Level One a driver must not use 400-series highways posted above 80 km/h, and the MTO Driver's Handbook adds one exception: if the accompanying driver is a driving instructor, the G1 driver may drive on any road. Since the handbook also requires highway driving experience before the G2 exit test, that lesson deserves a page of its own.
Should a driving school website promise an insurance discount?+
No. Ontario says a provider may offer one, that it is not part of the BDE Program, and that completing a course does not guarantee it. The guaranteed benefit is the time reduction — the G1 exit road test at eight months instead of twelve. Promise the discount and you have written the one sentence on the page a parent can disprove with a single phone call.
What does a driving school website cost?+
$899 one-time for up to 10 pages, $1,499 for a larger site with a page per course, pickup area and instructor, and $2,999 where cohort scheduling, in-car lesson booking or online payment is involved. One payment, fixed in writing before work starts, and about 5 to 7 days once the content is ready. See my website design packages.
